Today, we are looking at one of the most challenging and convicting passages in all of Scripture: Revelation 3:14-22. It captures Jesus speaking directly to the church in Laodicea, and what makes this message so powerful—and so unsettling—is that Jesus has nothing positive to say to this church.
There is no praise. There is no encouragement. There is only correction.
It is vital to understand from the outset that this is not a message to unbelievers or the secular world. This is written to church people. It is addressed to people who gather, who know the language, and who would boldly say they believe. Yet, something has gone terribly wrong.
The Danger of Lukewarm Faith
“Write this letter to the angel of the church in Laodicea. This is the message from the one who is the Amen—the faithful and true witness, the beginning of God’s new creation: ‘I know all the things you do, that you are neither hot nor cold. I wish that you were one or the other! But since you are like lukewarm water, neither hot nor cold, I will spit you out of my mouth!’”

The first thing we see in this passage is that Jesus knows your true spiritual condition. He says, “I know your deeds.” Nothing about your life is hidden from Him. You can look good on the outside, say the right things, and show up every Sunday, but Jesus sees beyond the surface. He sees your passion, your priorities, and your heart.
He tells this church, “You are neither cold nor hot.” They hadn’t completely rejected Him (cold), but they weren’t passionately pursuing Him either (hot). They were somewhere in the comfortable middle.
Here is the inherent danger of lukewarm faith: it feels safe. It feels comfortable. It doesn’t cost much, require much, or change much. It is a version of Christianity where:
- You attend, but you don’t surrender.
- You believe, but you don’t burn.
- You follow, but only at a distance.
Jesus says something shocking in response: “I am about to vomit you out of My mouth.” This isn’t symbolic fluff; it is intentional. Lukewarm faith is repulsive to Him because it is deceptive. A spiritually “cold” person knows they need God. A lukewarm person, however, thinks they are perfectly fine.
Are you on fire for God, or have you settled into spiritual comfort?
The Deception of Self-Sufficiency
“You say, ‘I am rich; I have grown wealthy and need nothing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked. So I advise you to buy gold from me—gold that has been purified by fire. Then you will be rich. Also buy white garments from me so you will not be shamed by your nakedness, and ointment for your eyes so you will be able to see.”

This is where the situation becomes even more serious. We see not just their spiritual condition, but their total misunderstanding of it. They claim to be rich and in need of nothing, yet Jesus reveals they are spiritually impoverished.
This is the deception of self-sufficiency. They had money, resources, and stability, and somewhere along the way, they replaced their dependence on God with dependence on themselves.
This is not just a Laodicea problem; this is a modern church problem.
We live in a culture where we can make our own money, solve our own problems, and build our own lives. If we are not careful, we start believing we don’t really need God. We may not say it out loud, but our lifestyles reflect it:
- Prayer becomes optional.
- Reading the Word becomes occasional.
- Obedience becomes selective.
Yet, in the middle of this harsh correction, there is incredible grace. Jesus doesn’t just diagnose the disease; He offers the cure. He invites us to come to Him for real faith, true righteousness, and spiritual vision. Only Jesus can give you what money cannot buy, what success cannot produce, and what comfort cannot sustain.
What are you depending on today? Your own strength, or Jesus?
The Invitation to Restoration
“I correct and discipline everyone I love. So be diligent and turn from your indifference. Look! I stand at the door and knock. If you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal together as friends. Those who are victorious will sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat with my Father on his throne.”
— Revelation 3:19-21
Do not miss the profound beauty in verse 19: “I correct and discipline everyone I love.” This correction is not rejection; it is an act of deep love. God doesn’t discipline people He has given up on; He disciplines those He is calling back. If you feel convicted or challenged right now, that is not condemnation. That is God’s love reaching out to you.
He calls us to repent—which means turning around. It means saying, “God, I don’t want to live like this anymore. I want to be on fire again.”
Then, we are given one of the most powerful images in Scripture: Jesus standing at the door, knocking. Often, we apply this verse to salvation, but in context, Jesus is speaking to the church.
Think about the weight of that. A church is active, functioning, and thinks it’s doing just fine—but Jesus is on the outside. He isn’t forcing His way in or breaking down the door. He is patiently knocking, waiting, and inviting.
And the invitation is deeply personal: “If anyone hears My voice and opens the door…” You cannot open the door for someone else. You have to open it yourself. If you do, He promises intimacy, fellowship, and ultimately, a shared eternal victory.
Answer the Knock
This message is not easy, but it is entirely necessary. Every single one of us falls somewhere in this passage. We are either cold, hot, or lukewarm.
The call of Jesus is clear: Do not stay lukewarm. Do not settle for a comfortable Christianity, and do not drift into spiritual apathy.
Have you lost your fire? Have you become spiritually comfortable? Have you been relying on yourself more than God?
Jesus is standing at the door, and He is knocking. This is your moment. Not next week. Not someday. Right now. If you hear His voice, open the door. Repent, return, and reignite your passion for Him today.
